Grill on the Hill

We sampled Grill on the Hill in Kew last night as a prelude to a diners club outing - in essence this was a meeting to discuss our next gastronomic adventure. Where better to plan for the next degustation than a nice little steak place. Ok a very good steak place - reminiscent of Vlado's, with a more extensive wine list and a couple more menu options than just steak. Although still very much a steak focused menu. We started with duck sausage and some of the best cevapcici that I've had. We then ordered our steaks. I opted to go with the 500g Porterhouse and Shane chose the 500g Wagu Rump - there wasn't a great deal of choice, I would have liked a grain and grass option to choose, not just a choice of cut, but to be honest, the simple approach with a fairly reasonable price point ($39-48 per 300g depending on cut) was a nice approach as well . Both steaks were ordered medium rare - although to be honest we both felt that Shanes steak was a little bit overdone. Each steak arrived on a large simple white plate - the solo act on the plate so to speak. Accompanying the mains we had steak fries, a cabbage slaw and a Cos salad with vinaigrette which were shared - no pretensions here. The steaks were very good, but not quite there to be truly exceptional, my points were a slight bitter char at times and a little more salt would have been nice to bring out the beefiness of the Porterhouse, but generally very good. Shane's rump, although slightly closer to medium than medium rare was a really nice piece of steak. We matched our steaks with a bottle of the 2009 Izway Don Shiraz - which was quite simply stunning. Desert was stick date pudding with 1927 Alvear Pedro Ximenes for me and a Lemon lime tart with 2012 Framingham botrytis Riesling for Shane. Both very good. Whilst not to the dining club standard, the evening was thoroughly enjoyable, friendly wait staff and a good atmosphere. Recommended.
